Lucas Gomes Sapienza, MD, Now Treating Gynecological Cancers, Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer at the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute
The UF Health Proton Therapy Institute announced in the spring that Lucas Gomes Sapienza, MD, PhD, joined the physician team, specializing in advanced radiation techniques that include image-guided adaptive brachytherapy, proton beam therapy and radiosurgery for treatment of gynecological cancers, breast cancer and prostate cancer. He is also an assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida.

The addition of Dr. Sapienza to the team expands the Institute’s ability to treat more gynecological cancer patients. He focuses on brachytherapy technique development to improve disease control and reduce pelvic radiation toxicity. He has led two prospective clinical trials — one for disease site: breast and one for disease site: gynecological — as the principal investigator and is the lead author of 22 research studies published in peer-reviewed journals. More about this research can also be found here.
Dr. Sapienza recently published information about a study he led concerning hydronephrosis (kidney swelling) after brachytherapy for cervical cancer. Read more about the study’s findings here.
Dr. Sapienza is originally from Brazil and joined UF after completing residency training at the Department of Radiation Oncology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. He speaks fluent English and Portuguese.
