Proton Therapy News Brief Roundup
World Lung Cancer Day
Since its inception in 2012, World Lung Cancer Day has been observed every year on Aug. 1 to raise awareness of lung cancer issues and magnify the need for more lung cancer research funding. Since lung cancer and its treatment have the potential to affect so many critical structures in a sensitive area of the body, it is important to protect the surrounding healthy tissues from excess radiation. The precise and targeted aspect of proton therapy is an optimal form of radiation treatment to lung cancer tumors, avoiding the healthy lung, heart and esophagus and potential side effects. Breast Cancer Research Day
Breast cancer advocacy and research is highlighted significantly in the month of October, but progress against the disease continues year-round. The Dr. Susan Love Foundation for Breast Cancer Research recognized the need to highlight breast cancer — specifically the research that is being done to cure the disease — outside the month of October and launched World Breast Cancer Research Day. It is recognized the 18th day of the 8th month of the year, symbolic of the 1 in 8 women (and 1 in 833 men) who will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
A panel of breast cancer experts were recently invited by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) to review research and find out when lymph node biopsies were necessary for early-stage breast cancer. Raymond Mailhot, MD, MPH, from the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute, was part of the team. Read more about their breast cancer research and findings.
